We base our formulations on safe and healthy plant ingredients, with minimal inclusion of synthetic molecules. When we use synthetics, we choose the ones that are produced from plant materials, in the most sustainable, clean way. We eliminate ingredients that do not meet our strict, safe and healthy requirements by leveraging the wisdom of traditional medicine and hard data generated by global scientific research. There are never any fillers, artificial colors or fragrances in our products, and they are never tested on animals.

Our team is extremely passionate about preserving the health of our families and friends, and our planet for our children and grandchildren. When we examined our skincare options, we grew increasingly frustrated at the long lists of chemicals in top skincare products, which looked more like an organic chemistry book than something that is OK to put on our bodies. The obscure ingredient names were making little sense to us – including the PhD’s among us. After searching for an alternative and finding none, the founder started blending her own skincare products and giving them away to family and friends. After hearing and reading about more and more people wanting to feel safe about the ingredients they put on their skin, TerraFlorens was born.

Our founder has a PhD in Biology, and training at the National Institutes of Health. The Sensible team has more than 50 combined years in senior Research and Development roles in the Biotech industry including multiple patents and publications. Staying current on scientific literature and basing our conclusions on solid scientific data, is in our blood, and we use the wealth of global research in building our products. We think the term “natural” is overused and under-defined. In our opinion, skincare products with only a tiny fraction of plant ingredients don’t make products “natural.” We use unmodified plant ingredients as much as we can (e.g., oils, butters and extracts). Then we add plant-derived molecules (e.g., safely chemically-modified plant material) and use a very small amount of synthetic molecules that are accepted as safe by the Cosmetic Ingredient Review Board or/and FDA, and globally approved for cosmetic use at the concentrations indicated. We also strive to always select organic materials and sustainable producers when possible. 

We use many ingredients that were proven to be beneficial over thousands of years by traditional medicine. After all, the natural evolution of healing approaches brought us aloe vera, olive oil, shea butter and oatmeal, and so many other wonderful ingredients that you can find in your kitchen cabinets. They really work. But we don’t stop there. The dermatology research field is very active in finding skincare ingredients to help with skin irritation, dryness, and of course to keep our skin from aging. We follow that research and add ingredients that were proven to be safe and effective for human skin.  For our choice of ingredients, we closely follow current regulations, certifications and industry standards such as Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act, Cosmetic Ingredient (CIR) Review Expert Panel, REACH, COSING, COSMOS, etc. We do our best to source ingredients that are certified organic. We use many ingredients that were proven to be beneficial over thousands of years by traditional medicine. We follow dermatology research and add new ingredients that were proven to be safe and effective for human skin.We test our formulations on friends and family extensively, and some of us have super sensitive skin! There are never any fillers, artificial colors or fragrances in our products. However, even most benign ingredient can be irritating to sensitive individuals, therefore we recommend starting from a small amount and discontinuing use if any signs of irritation occur.

Our products are formulated to be safe in every application. For example, you can use our face cream on even the most sensitive under eye areas. They are however designed for different applications, and we recommend using them according to the directions on the package.

The best skincare formulations (including ours) will provide moisture to your skin and build a barrier to trans-epithelial water loss, which will make your skin immediately look smoother and plumper, and feel soft and hydrated to the touch. No skincare product will change your appearance overnight,  no matter what fancy marketing claims promise. The secret to great skin is:

Each person has a special type of skin. We are all unique, and thus there is no product that works for everyone. You have to try and see what makes you feel and look great. Our product descriptions will help you to choose an appropriate skincare solution for you, and our ingredients are well defined to tell you what to expect.

We only use natural flavors and essential oils in our formulations, and the default is no added fragrances or colors. Some of our products have wonderful herbal smells from the ingredients themselves. In some of our products, we add a very small amount of essential oils and natural flavor extracts from flowers, fruits and berries. Not enough to cause irritation, but enough to add a very light, dissipating smell that you can only detect while you use the product.

Yes, you can order samples of most of our products. We routinely include  product samples with customers’ orders. We love hearing customer’s feedback on our products!

We typically add emulsifiers and stabilizers to bind oil and water ingredients together – remember oil and vinegar that easily separates? And mayonnaise that does not separate? Well, the same here. The emulsifiers we most commonly use are derivatives of natural oils and sugars and are very skin-friendly. We also use some of the scientifically developed molecules if they help with efficacy of the product.

We try to preserve our formulations naturally when possible. For example, our lip butter doesn’t have a chemical preservative and is proected with Vitamin E that is a strong antioxidant to keep oils and butters fresh. However, the formulations that contain both water and oil are very similar to food items, and microbes would happily grow in them if there were no preservatives. We use a minimal amount of internationally approved cosmetic preservatives, make products in small batches and ship them fresh.

We make our products in small batches and ship them fresh, and we ask you to use them within 6 months. We also recommend using a spatula for getting products out of the jar, to preserve their freshness and avoid contaminating them with microorganisms from your hands. 

Of course! We never test our products on animals, and we purchase our ingredients only from cruelty-free companies.

Majority of our products are vegan, but we do use a small amount of beeswax in some of our products. They are labeled accordingly.
