Licorice
What is it?
Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra), is cultivated throughout Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. Its root is used as a flavoring in candy, foods and beverages.
Main Benefits:
Whitening, anti-aging, reversing sun damage, moisturizing
More Information:
Licorice root has a long history of use, going back to ancient Assyrian, Egyptian, Chinese, and Indian cultures. It has shown to have antioxidant, anti-tumor, anti-platelet, anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory activities. Licorice root extract is broadly used as a natural treatment for skin whitening. In mammals, UV radiation induces melanin synthesis in melanocytes as a protective mechanism against UV damage. Two flavonoids from licorice roots, glabridin and isoliquiritigenin, were shown to inhibit tyrosinase, key enzyme in melanin biosynthesis, and induce melanin degradation.
